Clients experience of therapy

Clients experience of therapy

Like many people I started therapy when I felt very lost and lacking direction in my life. I wasn’t sure what to expect before I started therapy but I had heard friends talking about the relief they had felt by just talking to someone who didn’t know them and who listened to them in a non judgmental way.

Over the course of two years I managed to explore the things in my life that were barriers to me moving forward. I looked at the reasons why I was focused on pleasing others, putting others before myself, my lack of self belief, believing I wasn’t good enough, believing I was stupid and generally feeling inferior to others.. I also looked at the different behaviours that I was engaging in that were not serving me well including drinking too much, not exercising, eating unhealthy food and burning the candle at both ends.

The first aspect of the work was to become aware of my thoughts and behaviours, to explore what was working/not working for me and finally to experiment with changing my behaviours/challenging my thoughts to see how Changing things might impact my life. We worked in the present but also looked at the wounds of the past and through the time in therapy I was able to heal the old wounds and engage with the world in a much healthier way. I felt unstuck and free for the first time In my life. Ten years on I still dip in and out of therapy just to make sure I keep my mental health in check.
