Profile
Sharon is registered as a Chartered Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland, an Associate Member of the EAPA Ireland (Employee Assistance Professionals Association) Ireland and a volunteer with LawCare Ireland, an organisation which works with lawyers who are experiencing work-related stress and depression. Sharon trained at Monash University in Australia and is also a Registered Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.
Sharon trained in Solution Focused psychology, a short-term therapy designed to relieve psychological distress and which utilises clients’ strengths to attain best outcomes from therapy. Sharon works to help process unresolved emotional and mental distress and to identify patterns of behaviour or thinking which may be leading to undesired consequences. Reframing thinking and behaviour, developing effective coping skills and finding practical solutions to the issues faced are integral to this process. Issues commonly dealt with include anxiety, anger management, depression, eating disorders, grief and loss, relationships, suicidality and trauma.
Also trained in Motivational Interviewing, Sharon is skilled in working with those experiencing problematic levels of gambling and alcohol use. Sessions can provide a space for reflection for those who are considering modifying their use but who may be ambivalent about the prospect of changing (a very common circumstance for many people). For those wishing to reduce their use, identifying what triggers an urge to gamble and/or use alcohol, developing practical strategies for managing urges, modifying behaviour and processing emotional distress form the bases of these sessions.
Sharon has provided individual and group therapy in private practice, community health and university counselling services, and is experienced in conducting psychological assessments. She is committed to creating a collaborative, confidential and non-judgmental environment for those with whom she works, and adheres to the PSI Code of Ethics.
